Honest answers

The questions everyone asks.

Straight answers about age limits, funding, and how RoleShift is different. If something is not here, just ask.

Am I too old to change careers?+

No. The average UK career-changer is 35, and over a quarter are 45+. Adult apprenticeships have no upper age limit, and plenty of employers actively prefer the maturity career-changers bring.

Aren't apprenticeships just for school leavers?+

Common misconception. Adult apprenticeships have no age cap - you can start one at 25, 35 or 55. The NHS, Civil Service, major banks and skilled trades all run programmes built specifically for career-changers.

Can I afford to take a pay cut to retrain?+

Most adult apprenticeships and trainee programmes pay you while you train. The apprentice minimum is £8.00/hr in year one, rising to full minimum wage after, though many employers pay well above that from day one. It's often a sideways move rather than a straight pay cut, and the long-term trajectory is usually better.

How is this different from Indeed or LinkedIn?+

Our checked employer board is built for people changing direction. Direct employer adverts are personally reviewed for experience requirements, title honesty, pay, training and qualifications. The apprenticeship directory is separate: imported adverts are shown as published by the government service and are not checked by RoleShift.

Is the career quiz scientifically validated?+

Honestly, no - and we wouldn't claim it is. It's a guided self-reflection tool, not a psychometric instrument. Treat your result as a starting point for thinking, not a verdict.

What happens after I apply for a role?+

You apply directly on the employer's own site. RoleShift does not sit in the middle of your application, take a cut, or ask you to create an account first. You will hear back from the employer directly.

Are the job listings on the site real right now?+

The directory carries thousands of live apprenticeship adverts, imported nightly from the government service and labelled by source. The checked jobs board opens with the first founding employers, who are being signed now.

How do you check that an employer hires on potential?+

A person reviews each direct employer advert against the five published tests. A role that requires prior industry experience for work advertised as trainable does not qualify. Imported apprenticeship adverts have not been through these checks.

Do I need to create an account to use RoleShift?+

No. Browsing roles, taking the quiz and reading the guides need no signup at all. Saved roles are stored on your own device rather than an account, so they will not follow you to a different phone or computer.

Is this free?+

Completely free for job seekers, always. RoleShift is funded by employer subscriptions for posting roles - you will never be asked to pay.
